Fairway & Greene Shirts

Andrew Penner

When you look at the classic golf photos taken during the “Golden Age” (the 1920s), certain things stand out. For example, the equipment they used was awful, the courses were unkempt and raw, and their attire was always ultra-classy. Not surprisingly, many of the game’s traditionalists balk at the way today’s pro golfers dress: no collars, hot pinks, psychedelic patterns, etc. Worst of all, the purists would say, is that many of the garments come “stained” with corporate logos, edgy slogans, or large insignias touting the shirt’s maker. At least one company, though, is bucking the trend. Based in Shelton, Connecticut and the proud outfitters of the 2004 US Ryder Cup Team, Fairway & Greene is one of the most respected golf apparel companies in business. And for good reason.

Catering to the country club crowd (their shirts are only available at the finest resorts and private clubs around the world), Fairway & Greene is emerging as a leader in high-end apparel. The classic 2005 lines from Fairway & Greene are simple, elegant and traditional; cuts are smooth and timeless. And, best of all, the fabrics used are among the finest in the world.

My first Fairway & Greene shirt will not be my last. At first touch, I thought I had my hands on a fine silk shirt. However, Pima cotton (F & G’s fabric of choice), which is grown on the high plains in Peru, is of such good quality, the strains ultra soft and strong, this hardly feels like cotton. Add the double-mercerization, the hand-stitching, and the crisp clean look and you’ve got a garment Francis Ouimet would have been proud to own.
