Quick Take: STX Synch 3 Belly Putter

Andrew Penner

Generally speaking, the only thing that goes into the belly of an average golfer during a round of golf is a hot dog and a can or two of loud mouth soup. But, thanks to a new putting innovation, that’s all changing. Now thousands of floggers all around the world are sticking the butt end of a putter deep into the soft, growling flesh of their midsections - and hearing the wondrous clink of a ball dropping into a cup more often as a result.

One such putter, the Synch 3, is made by a company that historically has been a proven leader in putting innovation. STX, the first company to introduce putter face inserts, has received a fair amount of attention with its Synch 3 – a weird looking 41 inch bow tie-shaped putting device.

Tom Lehman (does he look good with this putter, or what?), Fred Couples, Lee Trevino, and many more are using the gut-job to near perfection, which was good enough reason for me to give this freaky-looking thing a shot (the center-bullet weight that protrudes from the back of this putter reminded me of the femme-bot’s brassier “shooters” in Austin Powers 2.)

I quickly noted the following about this putter: a) it doesn’t work well with a quick stroke, which, apparently, is my norm, and b) once you slow things down and allow your shoulders to rock with the natural rhythms that this beautifully weighted “thing” authors, you have the potential to lull your playing partners to sleep with a symphonic putting show. Am I going to switch? Probably not. For me, beer and a belly putter – as well as a putting stroke that is naturally (I think) a bit quick - don’t mix.

But, for those golfers who lay off the sauce and have the wherewithal to allow a club to control them, as opposed to them trying to control the club, the Synch 3 Belly Putter could be a career-changing solution. Just ask Tom Lehman.

adidas Golf Wins Footwear Count at Canarias Open de España

Press Release

adidas Golf proudly announced that at this week's European Tour event, the Canarias Open de España, the company achieved its first outright footwear count victory of the 2003 PGA European Tour season. London-based Sports Marketing Surveys Ltd. -- an independent agency that has covered the European Tour full-time since 1994 -- tallied the victory, reporting that 72 pairs of adidas Z Traxion Tour golf shoes were put into play versus 68 for the nearest manufacturer. This week's victory built on last week's count at the Algarve Open de Portugal, where adidas Golf and the market leader tied for the number-one position, both with 68 pairs of shoes in play.

Prior to 2002, the market leader had never lost a tournament shoe count on the European Tour. adidas Golf broke that streak by winning three footwear counts outright in 2002, at the Algarve Open de Portugal, Novotel Perrier Open de France and the Trophée Lancôme, as well as tying for number one at two additional tournaments.

"We're thrilled that the success that the adidas brand achieved on the European Tour in 2002 is now continuing into 2003," said Bob Maggiore, Marketing Manager for adidas Golf. "It's an indication that more of the world's best players are choosing to wear adidas Golf footwear because of the high performance and comfort that it consistently provides."

Fast Facts:

adidas is the second-largest sporting goods company in the world. adidas boasts over 75 years of history and heritage. Sergio Garcia, Justin Rose, Ian Poulter and over 250 other golf professionals will wear adidas across the world in 2003. adidas is the fastest-growing shoe, and most visible apparel brand, on the European Tour.

Kent Sports Launches "Alpha Reaction Golf"

Press Release

Kent Sports, Inc. announced today that it has formed Alpha Reaction Golf (www.alphareactiongolf.com), which will provide cutting edge, innovative, top quality drivers, fairway woods, irons, wedges and putters to the golfing public. Kent Sports currently manufactures an "Alpha Reaction" line of drivers, which has become extremely popular with the company’s customer base. The formation of this new division will enable the Alpha Reaction Golf team to focus solely on creating golf equipment that will meet Alpha’s high performance goals.

Alpha Reaction Golf will inherit the proven record of accomplishment of "Alpha Reaction" equipment, which, again, has proven very popular with Kent Sports’ clients. Additionally, Alpha Reaction drivers have gained popularity on the professional Long Drive circuit. As part of its product performance research and development plan, Alpha Reaction drivers were introduced to some of the world's biggest hitters. The word of mouth was so positive that over thirty (30) competitors chose to hit Alpha Reactions at the recently completed 2002 ReMax World Long Drive Championships. Vince "Boom Boom" Howell, winner of last weekend’s season-ending Pinnacle Long Drive Tour Championship, used an Alpha Reaction driver to qualify for the World Finals. Howell won that qualifier by over thirty yards with a 410-yard bomb.

"I can’t say enough about the Alpha Reaction products," stated Michael McLaney, who won $100,000.00 by beating John Daly at the Pinnacle Distance Challenge Finals in October. "I tested every head out there before my shot at the big money and the Alpha Reaction driver I hit outperformed all the major company’s products as far as distance goes. I am convinced that my Alpha Reaction is the reason I was able to get my victory at the Pinnacle Distance Challenge."

Alpha Reaction Golf stated that its drivers, which will be introduced by the end of the year, will feature an advanced two piece construction manufacturing process and will be built with a forged 15-3-3-3 beta and SP700 titanium face insert. These exacting standards will allow golfers who use Alpha Reaction drivers to reach performance heights never imagined.

About Alpha Reaction Golf Alpha Reaction Golf (www.alphareactiongolf.com) is a new division of Kent Sports, which has been a recognized leader in the golf club industry for over a decade. Alpha Reaction Golf developed the "Alpha Reaction" line of clubs as a high performance equipment using the only the best design, the highest quality materials and the latest technology. Alpha Reaction clubs are used by a growing number of professional Long Drivers and is being introduced to the PGA and Buy.com Tours.

Dunlop Tees Up New Low Compression Ball

Press Release

Dunlop tees up the newest entry into the hot Low Compression golf ball segment this spring with the launch of LoCo. Set to retail at $16.95 per dozen, the South Carolina-made ball is a marked departure in name, price and packaging from the rest of the low compression category.

Dubbed “LoCo” because of its low compression technology, the ball is available in a dozen pack that is anything but traditional in appearance. The pack features the off-beat LoCo logo in electric blue on a bright yellow background. Beneath the logo is an oversized LoCo ball, which is stamped “Crazy Long.”

“The name and pack bring a unique flavor to a wall of fairly predictable, corporate looking package design,” said Shane Duffy, vice president of marketing for Dunlop Sports Group Americas. “We want to connect with golfers who want a great-feeling distance ball at a great price. The technology behind this ball is serious business. But the attitude of LoCo reminds us the game is fun.”

Dunlop engineered LoCo to compress more easily on the clubface for golfers with moderate swing speeds, allowing better energy transfer and improved rebound for explosive distance. But the same low compression technology also creates a ball that’s extraordinarily soft and playable for approach shots into the green. Off the tee, LoCo’s low spin characteristics give golfers a straighter, almost self-correcting flight. The advanced dimple pattern was designed to maximize distance, while generating a slightly lower flight trajectory.

According to Duffy, LoCo’s $16.95 price underlines Dunlop’s commitment to the serious, yet savvy golfer. “Having tour players endorse a golf brand is an expensive proposition. Instead of paying the pros, our approach is to give golf enthusiasts more quality and performance for their money. And we can do it because the technology and manufacturing are coming directly out of our own factory.” First shipment of the new ball from Dunlop’s Westminster, South Carolina manufacturing plant into all trade channels is slated for mid-April.

A worldwide leader in sports equipment since its beginnings in 1910, Dunlop continues to create innovative equipment for dedicated sports enthusiasts, including the acclaimed Tad Moore golf club collection and the world’s #1 tennis ball.

New MaxFli D-TEC Golf Balls!

Press Release

MaxFli has released a new line of golf balls designed to address multiple characteristics of ball flight in each ball. Please read below for the press release:

D-Tec Extra Straight Distance

The new D-Tec Straight Distance was designed to meet two objectives: distance and accuracy. The high-energy core was formulated to combine maximum-allowable initial velocity with exceedingly low spin; likewise the Surlyn cover incorporates properties that limit spin. Despite its low spin-rate, the D-Tec Straight Distance launches on a high angle thanks to its wind-resistant 442-dimple pattern, giving it great carrying power, especially on approach shots. The D-Tec Straight Distance is the longest, straightest ball Maxfli has ever offered.

Performance Summary

* exceptional distance * low-spin for arrow-straight accuracy * high launch angle for added carry * wind-resistant dimple pattern

D-Tec Extra Spin Distance

The new D-Tec Extra Spin Distance was designed to deliver the extra yardage you’d expect from a distance ball, but with the kind of soft feel and high spin-rate off the irons that you wouldn’t expect. How were we able to combine such seemingly incompatible performance characteristics? The key is an exceedingly high-energy distance core and the way it works in concert with the soft-yet-durable Surlyn cover that features a 442-dimple pattern designed to launch at a high angle and to knife through the wind.

Performance Summary

* high launch angle and low spin-rate off the driver for distance * high spin-rate off the short irons for control * unusually soft feel for a distance ball * wind-resistant dimple pattern

Irons

I got these irons at Dallas Golf a couple of years ago. I purchased a used set, cause I was (and still am) a poor college kid and they were a lot cheaper than buying new ($300). I wanted blades because I had been progressing from game-improvement clubs down to traditional irons. I sold my TA 3's and picked these up. I'll never regret the decision.

I like everything about this club. At address, the club sets up perfectly. The topline is thin and it is very easy to line up to the target. The clubs also look amazing in your bag. When you walk up to the tee with a bag full of blades, people take you seriously. When hit on the sweetspot, the ball rockets off the clubface on what I could only describe as the perfect trajectory. The ball sails towards the target and lands softly. The feedback with these irons is, of course, unbelievable. Fades, draws, knockdowns, punches, and just about any other shots you can think of are easy to execute if your swing is on track. These irons are by far the best blade that I have tried. If you can still find a good set for a good price pick them up in a hurry!

The only thing that I don't like about these irons is the feel on mishits. Your hands sting when you miss the middle of the clubface. If it's cold outside and you're not swinging well then watch out.

As with all other Mizuno products, the craftsmanship of these irons are superb. Mizuno really took their time designing these irons and it shows. The only complaint I have is that the chrome nicks and dents quite easily, but that has little effect on the playability of the clubs.

Find them, buy them, love them. I did and I'll never look back.

Bags

I purchased this carry bag at my local pro shop for about $160.00. I needed a bag that would hold plenty of gear, but also be light enough to carry for 18 holes. I tend to play about 20 rounds a year, and mainly on hilly terain. Therefore, a light weight two-strap system carry bag was a must.

There are five points which sold the bag. 1) The bag is made of light weight material, and is constructed very well. 2) There is plenty of room for gear. There is enough room for a rain suit, golf balls, umbrella, and any other misc. items you might need. 3) The 2 strap system. This allows the weight of your bag to be distributed to both shoulders. This means your back will thank you after your round of golf in the 90 degree heat of the summer. I also found the straps easily adjustable, even while walking with the bag on you back. 4) The divider in the mouth of the bag is padded. This keeps my graphite shafts in great shape. 5) Lastly the carry bag has a stand which props open when you put the bag down. The stand is very sturdy, and is a lifesaver in the rain or early mornings when the ground is wet.

To be honest, there is nothing I do not like about the bag itself. However, I wish the bag came in more colors combinations.

This bag is of the highest quality.

I would recommend this bag to anyone. Even if you ride a cart, this is a great bag. The investment in this bag will payoff. I expect to get many years use out of this particular bag. I feel that you can't go wrong by buying this bag.

Total Performance

Balls

$16 for 10 balls online.

I've been a Dunlop ball player for years. I needed some new balls before an outing one day and decided to try the Total Performance variety.

The soft shell or skin is easily damaged in my opinion. I'm getting nice distance with these balls and they seem to offer pretty good control, but I'm damaging them left and right. Maybe I got a bad batch.

Apparently the construction is not that great. I've sliced two of these balls and feel like I'm getting flat spots in at least two others. I might buy them again just to be sure, because I've been playing this brand for years with no problems. Just felt I had to report on what I actually experienced, though.

A decent ball, not too expensive but apparently with a soft skin. Damages easily. I wack the hell out of the ball and have a tendency to come down on the ball with my irons and I'm having a real hard time keeping these balls in playable condition.

200 Series Sand Wedge

Wedges

Paid $65 online. I spend a lot of time on the beach so I figured I better get a tool to help me out when I'm in that situation. $65 wasn't too bad for a hell of a club so I went for it.

I like the rounded (they call it radiused) sole. It really helps me to not dig in as I have a tendency to get behind the ball a bit - even more than you're supposed to when in the sand.

There's nothing to NOT like. It's a quality club for a great price. I just wish I would have purchased all Taylor Made irons. I could use the forgiveness everywhere on the course, haha..

First rate. High quality 431 stainless steel (whatever that means) and the impact pad are excellent. Striking the ball sends shivers down your mates spine. Everyone knows when you've hit solid and this club sounds like a million bucks.

If you're looking for a sand wedge under $100, look no further. I couldn't be more pleased. I'm seriously considering replacing my irons with the Taylor Made 200 series set now that I've been playing this wedge for a few rounds. I love it!

Putters

I bought the putter through a local retailer called Fry's Warehouse in South San Francisco, CA. I purchased it with the hope that it would help with my putter alignment. I paid $169.00

It really does help with my putting alignment. I also like the White Hot insert, it has a very sweet feel.

I would have hoped it would have better sight marks on top of the putter.

Terrific

I am very happy with my purchase, and would do it all over again.

Olazabal Inks Long-Term Agreement With MacGregor

Press Release

Global golf superstar and double Master's winner, José Maria Olazabal has agreed to a long-term extension of his agreement with MacGregor Golf to play the company's successful V-FOIL forged irons, wedges and new V-FOIL woods. With seven top ten finishes and a victory at the Buick Invitational to his credit, Olazabal has become one of the most consistent top performers on the 2002 PGA Tour.

"José Maria Olazabal exemplifies our brand values. He is the game's most imaginative, innovative shot-maker. And, he always gives you his best," said Barry Schneider, CEO and owner of MacGregor Golf. "We feel fortunate that José Maria chooses to be a long-term member of the MacGregor family and know that we are better clubmakers for it."

"The reason I'm extending my association with MacGregor is simple. I want to win more Majors, and MacGregor makes the best clubs in the world to help me do that," said Olazabal. "Golf fans know that I've never been the type of player who sells out to the highest bidder. This is all about the equipment. V-FOIL forged technology makes the game a little easier for me. And MacGregor's clubmakers are remarkably talented. I trust them with my game."

José Maria Olazabal, the son of the greenskeeper, grew up on a golf course in Spain. In 1994, he won his first major championship, the Masters. Olazabal's greatest subsequent achievement in golf came in April 1999, after recovering from a debilitating illness; he won the Masters for the second time, making him the only European golfer under 40 with two major championships to his name. After this achievement, Olazabal was presented with the Golf Writers Association of America's Ben Hogan Award in recognition of his outstanding comeback from injury.

Olazabal will continue to be part of MacGregor's Tour Advisory Staff working with double U.S. Open winner Lee Janzen, to provide performance feedback on MacGregor's next generation V-FOIL irons and woods.

Paid $399 at a pro shop. Was looking for something to improve my game and after breaking 90 for the first time, decided it was time to get a little more serious.

What's not to like? First of all it's a beauty. Even though beauty may only be skin deep, all you have to do is hear the sound this driver makes when you nail the ball and you'll know your money was well spent. Typically I can drive the ball about 230 yards (I'm a small guy), but I'm consistently getting 20 to 30 more yards out of this pup. It's very forgiving and that's exactly what I need right now.

It's a bit on the expensive side and the head of the driver is unusually large and surprisingly light. Even though I can appreciate the extra surface area, I sometimes wish there was more weight behind it.

Titanium with a very light club head. Mine has the Grafalloy shaft and is 8.5 degrees of loft.

Quite expensive, but will make a difference if you can get used to the light weight. It's a very forgiving club that can make a difference if you let it. Even if you don't hit 'er straight, the sound that rings out when you hit the ball will make you sound like a pro!

Irons

Paid $400 online at golfgods.com about a month ago. Needed something forgiving to help get me into the 80s!

The thin face really seems to help with less than perfect contact. I also like the low center of gravity which helps get me up in the air where previously I'd have problems once in a while.

I find these irons to be a little more rigid than I'm used to which has forced me to work on my speed and come through with a little more control. Of course they do have a more flexible shaft available so if you're in the same boat check those models out.

Very good quality from a reputable brand. Construction is first rate. Very solid and well built.

Like most equipment, the cost of the clubs doesn't necessarily have a directly proportional positive impact on your game. I think the set is probably a little over priced, but certainly is good quality and has saved me a few strokes in the past few rounds. I'm not one to overrate something, though, so I'm giving them a 3.

Irons

I bought these clubs at a Pro shop for 950.00 Canadian. I always had my eyes on them and after struggling with Titeist 981 SL because the shaft was to soft, I decided to make the move.

I love these clubs because of nice feeling I get at address. I love the nice crisp feeling it gives even on off centre shots. I am now converted to forged. The distance is great, however, a little less than my previous irons. They are very easy to shape shots, and when you hit that perfect shot it gives you an unbelievable feeling, on top of it, they look great. I would recommend them to any one trying to improve his game.

The only bad thing I can think of is the fact that they ding and scratch very easily. Typical of the soft forged Irons.

They are really well made; you can see why Mizuno is the # 1 Iron on tour. Mizuno found a way to match technology ( T-Zoid ) in a traditional looking Blade that only the purest usually like.

I am very happy with my purchase and I hope many more players will have the chance to experience these marvellous Irons.

used ebay for $310.00 due to cost and availability. local shops did not have this model in yet.

I had the standard 320 model in 8.5 with proforce 65 stiff and was pleased but seemed to be hitting many drives low left. I have a natural draw anyway and understood that the standard 320 has draw bias in it (face is 1* closed). When I read about the tour model I wanted to see if that would fix my problem since it is set up square no draw bias. The model I obtained was 9.5* with the same proforce shaft 65 stiff as the standard model i had. The results were as I had hoped, much easier to work the ball and mabey a bit longer, hard to say for sure due to loft differences. As with any club change some time is needed for me to get the consistancy i want but so far great experience drives 10 to 15 yards longer that my GBB I had previously with little loss of control.

Well not a complaint but the head size takes some getting use to at 330 cc. My only complaint is with the headcover not the best in terms of quality i fear it will wear out and need replacement every year or so.

I am very happy with this club (for now until i hit a couple OB). if you have a natural draw then the tour model is a must but both the tour and standard are long and attractive looking clubs.

Harrison Shafts Stay Hot as Tour Season Finishes Strong

Press Release

Jim Furyk won the Wendy's Three Tour Challenge, Jim Thorpe teamed with John Jacobs to finish second in the Senior PGA Tour division of the Hyundai Team Matches, and Josh Broadway qualified for the PGA Tour Qualifying School finals. Harrison shafts are in the bags of all three. Harrison shafts continue to earn praise among professionals worldwide as they help them achieve greater success in Tour wins and money earned.

All Harrison shafts are American made from premium graphite. The company's patent-pending Integrated Titanium Filament technology imbeds titanium filament into satellite grade graphite in its PRO 2.5 Titanium and Striper Titanium shafts. The design reduces shaft lag, which helps eliminate hooks and slices while adding distance.

Furyk, one of the top 30 money winners on the PGA Tour and winner of the 2002 Memorial, uses a Harrison titanium-reinforced shaft in his 3-wood. Thorpe's woods feature the Harrison PRO 2.5 Titanium shafts. The shafts contain the titanium-reinforced X-6200 graphite, with 2.5-degrees torque and a mid-high flex point. After he won the Senior PGA Tour's Countrywide Tradition, the first Senior Tour major of 2002, Thorpe shared credit with Harrison shafts for his championship. Since joining the Harrison Tour Staff in 2000, he has won five times and recorded 24 top-10 finishes. His earnings are almost triple the amount he won in 25 years on the regular PGA Tour.

"I always tell anyone who asks me that the shaft is the most important part of the golf club," Thorpe said, "and Harrison makes the best shafts in the world." He cites the 10 additional yards per drive he is averaging since switching to Harrison shafts as a key reason for his recent success.

Josh Broadway, recently featured on the Golf Channel, is a cross-handed golfer who reached the 2002 PGA Tour Q-School finals. His woods rely on the Harrison Pro 2.5 Ti Tip shaft, which is distinguished by its distinctive yellow design. The shaft is made from X-7200 graphite with a titanium-reinforced tip. It measures 2.5-degrees torque with a high flex point.

Proven Tour success can be passed onto golfers who purchase golf clubs with Harrison shafts or re-shaft existing clubs with Harrison shafts. The unique Harrison Fitting Matrix guides golf club manufacturers or independent clubmakers in the selection of the shaft that best matches the golfer's swing characteristics and improvement needs.

Whether in the clubs of a tour pro or an average golfer, Harrison shafts are made by hand with the same exacting specifications, and tested, torqued and frequencied by hand in the same high standard. Harrison is the shaft to play, as evidenced by its growing use on professional tours worldwide. Harrison shafts have been in use to win more than 16 tour victories, including two majors, and more than 120 top-10 finishes.

Steve Flesch Trusts New Titleist Pro V1 to Capture HP Classic in a Playoff

Press Release

It took one extra hole, and in the end it took one spectacular putt, as Steve Flesch captured the HP Classic for his first career PGA Tour victory. Trusting the new Titleist Pro V1 golf ball, Flesch fired consecutive 7-under par 65's on the weekend to top a leaderboard that featured 9 of the top 10 finishers who also relied upon Titleist for their success. Flesch's dramatic come-from-behind win marked the 13th for Titleist on the 2003 PGA Tour, 10 more than its nearest competitor with 3. Additional victories on the PGA European and Champions Tours, increase Titleist’s worldwide win count to 46, more than three times the nearest competitor with 15, and more than all other golf balls combined.

ACCORDING TO SCRIPT: Like Flesch, fellow playoff participant Bob Estes relied upon the new Titleist Pro V1 golf ball, as did 9 of the top 10 finishers. Titleist players rounding out the top 10 were Scott Verplank (3rd/Pro V1), Mark Wilson (4th/Pro V1x), Jerry Kelly (T5/Pro V1x), J.L. Lewis (T5/Pro V1), Woody Austin (7th/Pro V1x), Chris DiMarco (T8/Pro V1) and Briny Baird (T8/Pro V1x).

TEE AND GREEN: In addition to the golf ball, Titleist also was the choice of the HP Classic of New Orleans champion off the tee and on the green, both of which helped seal the playoff victory. In addition to relying upon the Pro V1x golf ball for his success, the winner trust a Titleist Titanium 983K driver and Scotty Cameron by Titleist prototype belly putter. Through the year’s first 18 events, Titleist has been the choice of more champions across every major equipment category on the PGA Tour including: golf balls (13), drivers (8), fairway metals (10), irons (7), wedges (12), putters (16) and gloves (8).

PLAYOFF PROWESS: The playoff at the HP Classic was the sixth of the 2003 PGA Tour season, and the third in the last four weeks. The champion at all six events chose Titleist as their golf ball choice in victory. In addition to Flesch (Pro V1), the other playoff champions include: Davis Love III (MCI Heritage/Pro V1x), Mike Weir (Masters/Pro V1), Scott Hoch (Ford Championship/Pro V1x), Mike Weir (Nissan Open/Pro V1), and Ernie Els (Sony Open/Pro V1x).

SECOND FIRST: Flesch becomes the second first-time winner on the 2003 PGA Tour, joining Ben Crane who trusted the new Titleist Pro V1x en route to the BellSouth Classic crown last month.

MILLION DOLLAR MEN: With the $900,000 first-place check, Steve Flesch moves into the top 10 in official PGA Tour earnings this year with over $1.3 million to date. A total of 19 players have earned over $1 million this year on the PGA Tour, including an overwhelming 15 of whom rely upon Titleist golf balls.

PGA EUROPEAN TOUR: Mathias Gronberg relied upon the Titleist Pro V1x to fire a final round 7-under par 65 to win the Italian Open Telecom Italia by two strokes. It marked the fourth career PGA European Tour title for Gronberg who rallied from three strokes behind to claim the victory. Titleist has been the choice of eight champions on the 2003 PGA European Tour.

CHAMPIONS TOUR: Tom Jenkins (Pro V1) earned his fourth career Champions Tour victory when he fired a final round 5-under par 67 to capture the Bruno's Memorial Classic. Jenkins becomes the 10th different winner on the Champions Tour, nine of whom rely upon the Titleist Pro V1 or Pro V1x for their winning success. Nearly 70 percent of the field trusted Titleist, with 55 players relying upon the Pro V1 or Pro V1x golf balls, compared to 19 for the nearest competitor.

Callaway

Hawk Eye VFT

Drivers

Don't ask. I got ripped. I wanted a Callaway driver so bad I paid top dollar, almost MSRP at the pro shop.

It's a Callaway! Solid, reputable and reliable. The shaft is a little stiff on this model, but I've got a strong swing so it's not a problem to get the clubhead speed up and still consistently hit square on.

I think it's really overpriced. I'm starting to realize that I can't let my passion for new equipment overtake my sensibility. haha. Yeah right. Still, it's not a whole lot better for me than some Taylor Mades I've played and I'm not seeing that much improvement in my game.

First rate. Can't complain here. I've always been impressed with my friends Callaway's and the solid construction and materials used are what they should be for a club in this price range.

Quality driver, somewhat forgiving, very pricey. If you must have the Callaway, go for it, I don't think you'll be disappointed. I just wish I would have shopped around some more.

Ally Series Putter

Putters

Paid $90 at the local pro shop. I was so frustrated with my putting game I could resist going out and getting a new putter - thinking it might make a difference - but probably knowing better.

It's all about feel my friend. This putter just feels right in your hands and when you line that shot up, there's a balanced feel to it that makes a pendulum stroke as easy as can be. Just need to be relaxed and let the Ally do the trick.

I have the stainless model, a 34" length with the standard lie angle. I should have tried the other lie angles because I think I may have been better off with the 2.0 upright lie model. Not complaining, though, just making a point. when you find a model you like, try all the fits before selecting. I've shaved a few strokes off here and there, but should have taken my time in choosing.

Ping construction is top notch. The putter has that non-glare finish they say is produced by "tumbling" - whatever that means. I like it because it's not fancy, it's not expensive and it gets the job done.

A Ping putter for $90. Need I say more!? I didn't pay too much or too little and got one of the best, most balanced putters out there. The only thing, as I mentioned before, is that I would recommend trying the different fits and lie angles. I didn't have a pro measure me for the putter and I didn't take the time to try the other models of this putter - I bet I could have got a better fit - but I'm not complaining. Oh no...

Drivers

PowerBilt

Mens 2002 Grand Slam Oversize Irons

Irons

Paid $300 online at a golf warehouse store. Shipment arrived very quickly and the service was great. Needed new irons and was impressed with the PowerBuilt reputation.

I like the soft grips and the oversize heads. I've only been golfing for a few years now and needed a set that would help me out while not breaking the wallet, if you know what I mean.

I got the graphite shafts with the medium flex because I haven't fully developed my swing yet. I figured I would need something to correct a slow club head speed, but the flex in these shafts was probably a little more than I needed. Not too bad, but more that I thought.

Well made with graphite shafts, double-heat treated stainless steel club head, etc. Very well built I may add and very sturdy. I think I'll be playing with these for quite a while.

The oversize club heads are really helping make the most of those little mistakes you make when you start playing. I'm not very consistent so every little edge I can get helps. The soft grips are nice because like most newbies, I tend to squeeze the hell out of the shaft due to nervousness, inexperience - whatever. They're very comfortable. Great clubs at a great price.

588 Gunmetal Wedge

Wedges

Got it for my birthday. Golfsmith.com for 110.00

It has a great feel, its light unlike some other wedges I've used. The tour velvet grip is great with it. There wasnt any problem getting the ball up. Produces spin. The club looks great.

There isn't anything not to like.

The quality is excellent. Cleveland always makes durable products.

This wedge has helped my short game a lot, I had a lot of problems landing the ball with no spin. Its a great club.

Titleist

Scotty Cameron Studio Design 1.5

Putters

I picked this one up from a friend in a trade. I got a good deal, but this putter is definitely worth the M.S.R.P. of $250.

I love this putter, the head is solidly crafted. The heavier head helps those little 4 footers and you can't help but get this putter close on those lag putts. Very solid feel and confidence over putts, what more do you want. The headcover is a big plus.

The only downside to this wonderful putter is the care that it takes. You have to wipe it off with baby oil after every round to stop the oxidation, but just put baby oil inside the "Screamin' Yellow" headcover and there goes that problem.

This is a very well made putter, it's a Scotty Cameron, what more can I say? The balance and feel of this putter is "buttah".

This is a wonderful putter, for everyone. It is well worth the money and everyone should give this putter a look with your next purchase.

XL3000 Soft Feel

Balls

I purchased these balls from Walmart for around $16.00 for a 15 pack. The local golf shops charge around %20.00 for a dozen. Still a nice price. I bought these because they are a low compression soft ball. I have had good luck with this type of ball.

Soft feel, long distance. Nice for chipping and high pitch shots. Also very nice to putt. I have experienced some spin back on full short iron shots with blades.

Nothing bad to say about this ball.

Fairly durable. Nice addition to the Top Flite line.

If you like softer golf balls such as MC Lady, Laddie, Revolution give then a try. The price is right. Great ball if you make a lot of pitch shots 75 yards and in.

Pelz

64* X wedge

Wedges

I purchased this at Edwin Watts Golf Shop for 129.00. Igot this club specifically for finesse shots around the normally hard fast greens at my home course.

This club is a weapon I would not want to be without after getting used to it , the Pelz X wedge has become my primary weapon around the hard fast greens I normally play.Distance control and accuracy are exceptional. This baby spins the ball even from the rough.Balls land soft and stop fast with this wedge. It is also beautiful to look at.Pelz has outdone himself with his new wedges and I plan on eventually adding a 56 & 60* Pelz wedge to my bag.

There is nothing to dislike about this wedge except maybe the price.

The construction and quality of this club are as good as I have seen in any club I have ever played.

This is a club everyone should try.It is a top quality consistent performer from fairway, rough or sand.

Bettinardi

BB1-M.S.

Putters

This was the best looking, best feeling putter I have ever tried! The weighting of the head is unlike any other. I paid $350 for it brand new, but on eBay you can find them used for around $200. I bought mine from a local golf shop

Perfect balance is the best way to describe how it strokes a golf ball. The honeycomb milled face is over 200% flatter than any other milled surface, including those of Scotty Cameron. It is unbelievable how pure a roll is created on every putt. The 24kt gold insert is soft and is layered over a large copper insert. It is a great feel. The shaft is very responsive because it is made by Precision, makers of Rifle shafts.

Nothing, except the grip got slick after 1 round in the pouring rain. Also, the finish has been wearing off on the sole, toe, flange, and corner of the face even though I have meticulously cared for it.

It is milled out of a solid block, giving it a feel that is the same for every putter. You don't have to worry about those putters that have necks welded on the putter, creating inconsistent feel from putt to putt and putter to putter. Even Scotty Cameron Studio Design putters have a welded neck because it is cheaper to make and mass produce putters that way. The body of my putter is made of carbon steel. There is a hidden copper insert and on top of that is 24 karat gold. There are other BETTINARDI putters made of stainless steel without inserts. Many finishes are available for putters, too, such as the black thunder finish similar to those of the Scotty Cameron Studio Design putters. The BB1-S.S. is available with a copper insert and has a slit in the sole for added feel.

BETTINARDI putters are the finest in the world. Forget Scotty Cameron by Titleist putters because they are only hype. The only good Scotty Cameron putters are those found on tour because many are made of German Stainless Steel and all are customized to fit the exact specifications of the player. Unless you want to pay thousands to get one, BETTINARDI is the putter for you. It is quality right off the rack. Look at bettinardi.com to see quality like no other! Get a BETTINARDI, today!

Nike Golf

Tour Staff Bag

Bags

Paid $250 in the pro shop at my club. I was looking for something that had tons of storage, would protect my investment and looked great too. The Nike bag fit the bill perfectly.

This is the 9.5 inch bag so it has a 6 way top divider system with full length dividers. A very nice feature for keeping things seperate down deep in the bag. There's a very nice velour lined pocket for valuables - a great place to keep that expensive watch while you're out on the links - knowing it is safe. Nice enclosed umbrella well.

The fact that it is synthetic leather. For the price, wouldn't you think you should be able to get a nice leather bag? Maybe they don't make them anymore. This is one of the most expensive bags out there, though.

Even though it's made of synthetic leather, it's very well made. Stitching is first rate and the zippers, pockets and other construction is very heavy duty. This bag will be around a while.

I think I over paid. For the price, the bag should drive itself around the course with me. I don't know what I was thinking. Sure, it has the Nike name and logo on it, but I should have known better. I could have got a Callaway or Ping bag, equally as nice, for probably a hundred bucks less - well, maybe $75.

Callaway

Hawkeye VFT

Drivers

I had seen some mixed reviews of this driver. Some were great and others were not, but I decided to go with the Callaway anyway. I purchased the 10* loft with regular flex graphite shaft for $220 used, but in very good condition.

The first time i hit this was on the range before my usual 9 holes. I was hitting mostly duck hooks with it at first. Once I swung it for a couple minutes though, I started to hit long high draws. When you make decent contact with this thing, it is very good. I would say it is pretty forgiving.

I think that the regular flex might be a little soft for my faster swing speed, so I would consider getting the stiff flex. I haven't been able to hit fades consistently yet. I think it is designed to draw.

This club is constructed well. It looks good at address, and feels great to swing.

Great driver, a little expensive if you buy new, but overall awesome club for any handicap level.

well I was taken by a pro onto the range and tried 7 different drivers and found this one to be the best. bought is for only $100.00

it has nice feel and distance and very good accuracy once you get used to it. it has alot of carry not always a good thing though.

very high ballflight but that is probally because i have a 115 mph swing speed and the stiff flex is like for at most 100 mph swing

Very durable and strong that is really all

fing the right flex for you like my friend thinks he will lower his handicap and be a hero if he got a X-Flex and he sucks too so don't be a hero and find the right flex for you it may even be a r-flex but so be it
